theDeadly wasps kill two siblings Mother, eldest child and brother-in-law survive attack but remain in ICU in serious condition
KUCHING: Tragedy befell the family of a car mechanic after two of his three young children were stung to death by a swarm of wasps near their home on Saturday.
In the 5.15pm incident at the Sungai Moyan flat complex in Batu Kawah, also stung were the mechanic’s wife, eldest child and an 11-year-old brother-in-law, all of whom are now in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Sarawak General Hospital in serious condition.
The dead were identified as Chen Sze Ying, a girl aged six, and her three-year-old brother Chun Jie, while the injured were identified as housewife Tan Wan Chew, 29, her eight-year-old daughter Sze Ting, and Tan’s youngest brother Chia Boon, 11.
Chun Jie and his mother were said to have been stung over 30 times all over their bodies, while the others suffered between 10 and 20 stings, also all over their bodies.
The five of them had earlier been taking a walk together on a land clearing behind the flat complex, and were believed to have been attacked after straying too close to a large hive etched on a boulder on the ground.
A 30-year-old neighbour identified only as Zarina, who lives on the ground floor unit directly beneath the victims, told The Borneo Post yesterday how she witnessed the deadly wasps’ attack of the five after hearing loud screams.
“You could actually see the wasps attacking the family as they were running away. All of the children managed to make it back to the flat complex except the youngest boy, who collapsed on the ground,” recalled Zarina, adding that she had known of the existence of the hive and had always reminded her children never to venture out into the area.
“The mother ran back to rescue him, but ended up being stung again, and collapsed three times before making it back to safety with her son,” Zarina said, adding that she immediately rushed out of her unit to help them.
She said when she reached them she was shocked by the severity of their injuries.
She said all the children were unconscious by that time, and Wan Chew was frantically relating the incident on her handphone to her husband, who was on his way back from work.
At that moment, Zarina’s husband arrived back home and, after learning of the incident, decided to rush all the victims to the hospital using his pickup truck.
